Our Group ProgramRead the NIH Excerpts
The Overcoming Childhood Obesity Program at The Natural Healing Spa is a unique program which addresses weight issues at their sources in a gentle but highly effective manner. We offer the child an opportunity to gain understanding of the outer and inner impressions that cause overeating and other unhealthy eating habits. Dr. Sigmund Freud observed that a child is a marvelous creature who can speak a foreign language as any language is foreign to the child at a tender age, and the child can also do mathematics: “Mommy I want two dollies”, “Daddy, I want two wagons”. Freud also believed that a child picks up imprints between the ages of 3-5 years which can be negative and positive, and which have the capability of staying with the child for the rest of his or her life, as they are buried deep within their subconscious minds. At the SPA, we believe that negative imprints must be addressed at an early age in accordance with Freud’s beliefs, to provide space without clutter for new habits for health. Our program is specifically designed for adolescents to learn how to enjoy life with good eating and satisfaction while creating an active, full life so that the importance of food, television and computer activities is viewed in the proper perspective. Children will express their feelings in a group setting and learn how to deal with various emotions and feelings that drive them to overeating. Our methods are grounded in relaxation while learning new habits for health. Hypnosis has many definitions and names which may give a better understanding of its component parts. You may describe it as relaxation, guided imagery, positive programming, release, expression and many other descriptions but be assured that every approach that is used with your child is gentle and non-threatening, and nonetheless extremely powerful for behavior modification.
Some Highlights of Our Group Program
At the outset, the child shall receive a private interview with a therapist to determine various aspects of the weight problems and to gather some of the child’s personal thoughts to gain insights that may be addressed in the group setting without revealing identities. If during the group classes our therapists believe that the child should receive additional one-on-one sessions, this will be suggested to the parents. Please be assured that this would only be suggested if deemed necessary and meaningful.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY EPIDEMIC

Reported by the National Institute of Health (Excerpts and paraphrasing shown here)
Childhood overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions. Currently, about 25 million U.S. children and adolescents are overweight or obese. Obesity during childhood has been associated with numerous adverse effects including a variety of health complications such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep disorders, as well as psychological effects such as stigmatization, discrimination, depression and emotional trauma. Obesity in childhood also substantially increases the risk of being an obese adult. In addition, adults who were obese during childhood have higher risk of developing various diseases than those who were not obese during childhood.
The development of obesity in childhood and subsequently in adulthood involves interactions among multiple factors that may shape daily diet and physical activity behaviors and increase obesity and cardiovascular disease risks.

When children feel inadequate to cope with a situation it makes them very angry. They become frustrated and resort to mischief which can include anything form talking back to parents, teachers, elders, being mean and spiteful, to hitting other people, to destroying their home and anything in between. If not checked in time, it gets worse. It escalates until you can't stand it any longer and explode.
Children who feel inadequate to cope do not respect themselves or others They hold themselves in contempt and behave accordingly. We may think that their behavior is illogical, but it is not. The child’s negative behavior always has a purpose behind it.
At the SPA, we strive for discovery, understanding, management, new habits for attitude, and acceptable demeanor for your children to facilitate their excellent growth for future happiness. The setting is relaxed and without pressure. Each session is positive as we believe that children cannot afford the luxury of a negative thought. We teach them how to process stress for ‘yes’, children have stress too, not just adults. We adults seldom realize that. Stories, myths and metaphors are integrated into our sessions as instruction and evocation of calmness instead of anger is more readily acceptable through the use of third person examples for overcoming anger.
You shall absolutely see the difference in your child’ behavior, speech and thought after the first few sessions.
ENHANCING CHILDREN'S MOTIVATION, STUDY SKILLS, SELF-RESPECT AND SELF-ESTEEM
Children are such beautiful human beings. They are so naturally curious early on in life. You can see the magnificent sense of wonder in their eyes, hear it in their speech, and feel it in their love. In the beginning when they are 3 or 4 years old, they want to learn and explore and look forward with great excitement to the day they start school. However once they begin, they may no longer see it as a wondrous place. Children often begin to begrudge the time spent in school and resent having to do homework for reasons too numerous to list. How sad! At the SPA, we believe that motivation and study skills are founded in self-respect, self-esteem and understanding. Here, we do not teach specific school-based subjects, but we teach the children how to deal with study, homework, test-taking and their presence in school through relaxation, positive programming, affirmations, and beneficial habits in a relaxed group setting. The relaxed atmosphere has worked wonders for persons accelerating their learning time-periods, and we therefore utilize the same methods for children to approach learning with patience and joy.
