"And there were beasts: three headed dogs, gorgons, ghouls and whirligigs, and dragons both alive and dead, for me to master, and I did"

- Hero With One Face

Dr. De Marco is an addiction specialist who has been teaching practicing hypnotists, doctors, nurses, psychologists, therapists and other health practitioners his methods for working with addicts over the past 20 years. He is the author of an acclaimed addictions Practice Manual that is used by practitioners throughout the USA since 1991. As part of his training, he attended self help groups such as AA, NA, GA and their support groups such as Alanon, etc. Since 1991, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the state-funded Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey and its Secretary, which is funded in the yearly amount of $1,000,000 to maintain the 1-800-GAMBLER Helpline, to educate the public, senior citizens and school children about the dangers of problem gambling, as well as refer patients to treating facilities. He has been a counselor on this helpline for seventeen years and has spoken to and counseled many gamblers, drug addicts, and alcoholics (because many of the compulsive gamblers were dually addicted or triple threats), and their families, friends, loved ones, and significant others. He has listened to hundreds upon hundreds of therapies relating to all forms of addiction both in his practice and self-help groups. He is steeped in research into negative and positive re-programming of the unconscious mind from “brainwashing” to authoritative to permissive hypnotic approaches.

The addiction problem is growing in the USA for many varied reasons at the present time. More political trouble in the world, increased violence from within and without, high amounts of divorce, unemployment, increasing stressors all add up to attempts to escape from reality, dulling of pain, easing the effects of poor relationships, etc., via substance abuse and addictive behaviors. We strive to understand the addictive mind in general, and of the specific addict-client to fashion our ‘HypnoAddictionology’ session program to meet the needs of the addict-client.

Our addictions program consists of 13 sessions spaced weekly. However, upon determining the intensity of the addiction, it may be necessary to see the addict-client twice a week in the beginning of the program. From the initial session, the client is programmed to alleviate the urges, cravings, needs and desires to pursue the addiction. The information gained from the Confidential Interview Form is evaluated after the initial session and decisions made to facilitate the integration of the personal needs and appropriate techniques into a 13 session-by-session treatment plan. The Confidential Interview is extensive and it is suggested that a supportive person be present during this interview to better focus on the history, and also to answer any questions that the supportive person may have as to the procedures that shall be followed, so that there is a sufficient understanding of our work. It is our rule that the addict-client is always alone while working in the hypnotic state with the hypnotist in all sessions. The client is taught self-hypnosis to practice and use at home, work or wherever feasible. The client is taught a very important and extremely effective trigger to eliminate urges, cravings, needs and desires. We conduct interactive sessions where the client participates in the techniques, in his or her recovery, in his or her abstinence, rather than he or she just sitting there and constantly listening to the hypnotist’s suggestions. Hypnotist and client meaningfully tap into the unconscious mind to ‘expose the demons to the light’. The client is put to work in our sessions. Numerous ‘homework assignments’ are given to the addict to continuously fortify the addict to be on guard against temptations. We receive feedback on feelings and happenings in between sessions to cover any necessary situation or issue. We muscle test the client to begin each session to determine abstinence in between sessions. He or she is given written Addiction Affirmations and General Affirmations during each session and to read at home to strengthen each session. Our techniques are tried and true, and truly unique and effective. We give no-nonsense answers to questions. The appropriate 12 Step Recovery Program is briefly integrated into each and every session in a clearly defined and meaningful fashion through programming of the subconscious mind. We work with the client to guard against relapse due to future happenings. Our program has been designed and implemented not only through the successes but also through the failures. The client is the most important person in our relationship and his or her desire and willingness to become abstinent leads to success.
